Meet Patricia

I am Patricia O’Connor and with your help I hope to be elected this November to serve on your behalf as Cape May County Commissioner.

I am a true “Jersey Girl.” I own a home in Cape May Court House. As Commissioner, I will devote myself to preserving our county’s beauty and enhancing its historic place as one of the most prestigious and enjoyable areas in all of New Jersey.

Cape May County has been in my heart since childhood. I grew up in Old Bridge, NJ, in a labor union family. My father, Robert Carrington, was Chairman of IBEW, NYC, Local 3 before retiring as Chief of Electricians for the Department of Environmental Protection. My mother, Dr. Mary Carrington, was a County Liaison for NJEA, taught in the Old Bridge schools, and was president of the alumni association of Rutgers Graduate School of Education. Today, my parents also reside in Cape May County.

I know what it means to be part of the hard-working middle class wanting to provide a better future for our families. With your help, I am seeking a “seat at the table” to work hard to give this to you.

I earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Rutgers University and a master’s degree from the New Jersey Institute of Technology.

Cape May County Commissioner candidate Patricia O’Connor and family

Family is everything! I am the mother of four adult children. My youngest son, Aaron, has autism. Over the years I have been involved with Special Olympics, Autism Speaks, and the Eagles Autism Challenge. I have raised tens of thousands of dollars for autism research over the years and have been involved in the special need’s population for decades.

With all we have to be thankful for, Cape May County faces a new set of challenges.

A new leader with fresh ideas who can collaborate with the commissioners and our residents to strike a healthy balance is necessary in this time of polarization. An effective leader knows how to negotiate, compromise, listen, reach across the aisle, build consensus – and move the county forward.

I am confident I can be that leader. As a mortgage banking executive, I am keenly aware of how important housing is to the future of our county. I have held senior level positions with CoreStates Bank, GMAC Mortgage, First Niagara Bank and Freedom Mortgage.

I started my career at Fannie Mae where I specialized in low-and-moderate-income lending, working with state housing financing agencies including NJHMFA. As a mortgage loan officer in our county, I have had the satisfaction of helping Cape May County residents with all their home finance needs – and, hopefully, earned their trust.
